I have a 1996 Grand Am SE..and inside my car there's a little lever to open my gas tank lid..but I've been noticing that whenever I start my car up..my gas lid pops open. Does anybody know what could be causing this?

The latch on the gas door lid is not fully engaging the lock/release mechanism. If you look at the lid you'll see a steel tang that probably has a hole in the center of it. That tang is what the lock for the lid grabs onto when you shut the gas tank door. If the tang is bent forward through use it won't fully engage the lock so that when you start the car the vibration causes it to pop open.

the fix should be simple--just bend the tab backwards a bit at a time until it latches securely. I'm not sure if that is the direction to go; if you bend it backwards and it doesn't latch at all, then you need to bend it forward. If you go too far it won't shut in one direction and won't stay shut in the other. Just keep playing with it and you'll find the right spot for the tang to latch and stay latched.

have fun!

hope that helps
