At our dairy our cows are first and foremost our pets. They have a wonderful stress free life. The calf is taken away soon because the calf and/or the cow could get sick from suckling on a dirty teat (don't get the wrong idea-the teat is of course very clean when we milk it). Most cows live about 4-8 years at a lot of dairy farms. At ours they usually live about 12-15. They are in no way tortured gruesomely and I'm sure 99% of farmers don't torture their animals. They are only sent to slaughter if they have been injured and they are in unfixable pain. I take great insult in your words and the insinuation that dairy farmers are nothing more than heartless, cruel people. We have about 140 very happy, content, spoiled pets that happen to be cows. We bend to their every whimsey, ie: what food they want to eat, where they want their head scratched, what stall they want to lay in. The vet is called out to give them a check up at the first sign of sickness or injury. And their feet are probably in better condition than yours. And yes, I do know each and every single one of their names. Why are you asking this in the pregnancy category anyways?

You are showing your ignorance here. Dairy cows are not slaughtered for food for several reasons. The MAIN reason being that in order to be old enough to breed, her "meat" would be old and too tough to use for actual food. Once a dairy cow, they remain a dairy cow until they die. As for the one's sent to the slaughter houses, those are the youngsters. And for you're thoughts about STEALING their milk. Alot of cows are more than happy to give of their milk, because, just like us, they become engorged and they can't use a breastpump themselves so they get their relief from being milked and since you've obviously never been around a cow judging by your statements above let me tell you this. If a cow is engorged and she needs to be milked and you think you aren't going to help her out she will follow you and cry and moo and even bite you if she has to to get you to milk her. It's not abusive, it's called co-living. We help her, she helps us and her kids get all the milk they need and we use what's "extra". The more serious question is why did you drop into a PREGNANCY forum to spread fallacies about cows? I think you have issues!

Um. You seem to have a very deep love for animals that's going in a little deeper than it should be. Also, torture? Not necessarily. It's pretty quick.

Now, this is just nature. We kill animals to eat. If a lion came along and ate me, I would be scared but accepting of why the lion attacked. If lions were capable of independent thought, wouldn't you find it a little strange if a bunch of lions were protesting the killing of humans? Lions can't eat veggies their whole life, they need meat! We do as well.

Meat offers nutrients that plants do not possess. One that is pure vegan is more likely to have a shorter lifetime. Also, plants grow from natural fertilizers which includes animal feces. You would rather eat the product of animal crap than the animal that doesn't even care about itself?

Recall that these animals are incapable of thinking for themselves. You use the words "torture" and such, but the animal sure does not see it that way.

People see this as "gruesome" but it sure as hell is not going to stop. This is a kill or be killed world. How we manage things for our nutritional value should be beneficial for us.
If the cows turned around, said "NO! GO AWAY!!" and kicked us, we probably wouldn't kill them nearly as much, would we?
No. Because the cows would have independent thought!

Why care for something that doesn't care about themselves?
If we didn't kill cows... They would eat grass. Go to the next area and take a crap in the same place over and over and eat grass until they move again. You think these animals have emotional value? The mother cow doesn't even really care about it's own offspring! It probably doesn't even know they are her kids! They obviously don't give a damn about their existence, so we use them for nutritional value that can help a race in need of advancing to a better tomorrow.

Saying we should care about something like that is like caring for a brick wall that smells horrible.

Now dolphins and humans have emotional value, since we are capable of independent thought over other races. Killing a
human sure is wrong! Why is killing a cow wrong?!

This is how the world goes around. It does seem awful, but from a farm point of view these animals sustain a lot of creatures. It keeps people alive and makes people livings. Milk cows however do not become slaughtered cows. They are raised for milking and the cows we eat are simply raised for that.

no longer authentic. There are categories of tears and homo sapiens are the only ones who cry tears as an emotional reaction. ALL mammals shed basal tears - tears used for lubrication and to bathe foreign places products from the attention, yet emotional tears - which incorporate hormones unique to emotion-based tears - are shed in basic terms by ability of human beings. this is a gorgeous tale, yet so is Cinderalla, and there is not any the style of outrage as fairy godmothers.

Most milk cows are not used for meat. They spend their lives producing milk. The sad fact of the matter is that man has been eating animal for a long time. Many people believe strongly that this not right and they don't eat meat or their by products and this is every person's choice. I grew up on a farm, though, and I hope it makes you feel a little better that the cows that produce milk generally are not used for meat.

Follow your convictions but be patient with those who do not have the same feelings.

How safe is the world you are living in? Must be pretty rosy if you can sit here on the computer all day and still get fed.

In answer to your question...yes, it's fair. Does she mourn the grass that shrieked as she tore it from its tender roots? How cruel. The poor, poor grass!!

FYI to all posters...this asker is posting all kind of "breast feeding animals" questions in many categories and totally abusing the system. Just check the askers profile. The questions need to be reported.

Yes, as long as the meat and milk are not cooked in the same pot.

As long as no hormones are used.
Glass of chocolate milk and a fine medium rare New York Steak.
umm- Fantabulicious!

o my gosh you are seriously comparing our survival and that of our children with whether its fair to let cows have babies then take care of them and then when the cows stop producing milk take them to butchering centers which makes our food that includes jello everyone (bones and hydrochloric acid) (oh and by the way there are two different breeds of cattle that are used for dairy and meat (males are usually turned into delicious steak meat and ribs and oooo yummy tasty hamburgers watch the food channel and history channel if you need to get your facts straight) and if you really want to make a argument talk about how those liberal morons want to kill our babies through abortion and cloning and research think about that how they take them and cut them up for parts to sell (then come back and talk to me about whether its right to kill cows or not why dont you go to india where cows are worshipped
