Yeap, I've encountered numerous times.
Whenever someone hears from me that my dream is to buy a mansion, a ferrari, have a corporation, and such... he/she will tell me to just be realistic or "dream on". If not, they will just give a sarcastic smile. Well, to me, I believe that I am able to.
Gosh, is it me or the people whom I've told my dreams to?
My apologies if I do sound arrogant.

I guess it depends on whether or not you are just talking about it, or actually taking steps towards it.
It's fun to dream, but eventually reality is going to come crashing in on you.
Then you get to learn the difference between needs and wants.
You want a mansion, but you need shelter.
You want a ferrari, but you need a reliable car to get to work.
You want to own a corporation, but you will have to get an education, and work your way up - unless you happen to be lucky, and have parents with tons of money, or are unusually smart, and are able to apply your knowledge and abilities in a way that makes you (and the people you work for/with) money then you might just end up working for a corporation instead of owning it.
And that corporation may very well be Mickey-D's.
And you will be manning the fryers.

Did you grow up poor? Nope, I do not see ambitious people as childish. I admire an ambitious person. Dreaming is WONDERFUL. Everyone needs a dream, and they need to strive to achieve everything they set out to do with good ethics, and honesty (yeah, right, like that will ever happen). Anyway, you should never let anyone walk all over your dreams, or discourage you from working towards your ultimate goal (s). If you work HARD you will get there one day. Sometimes people want to see others fail, then they don't have to feel bad about themselves. While I don't think you sound arrogant, I DO think you seem shallow.

Ppl think it's childish because it's dreamy of person to go on saying what they want and rather, not be talking about the things u do now. What we do now are building blocks to the dream.. Not only this but I realised at one time that ppl don't like to hear about your future plans most especially if they are not involved in them! Key idea for you is to be more open. I know how u feel, I have been keeping my dreams to myself and work best I can to actually get onto acheiving them. Because sadly sometimes it feels like having the dream is about as good as acheving it. and that is really where we go wrong.

I don't think it's childish, as long as you're working hard to make it happen. I don't know where you are in life, but wherever you are, you can take steps to do this. If you're in school, get the best grades you can in the harder classes. Advanced Placement classes will look great on a resume or college application. If you're in college, the same rule applies. If you're out working for a living, work hard, learn more than you need to know to get ahead in your job or company, and take advantage of opportunities that get you closer to your goal. It can happen, and some people accomplish it every day.
good luck!

I'll elaborate on the corporation bit.
One of my dreams is to draw floorplans (mostly residential. . .big housing market where I live). sure I would like to start my own business. . .but I'll need a cushion first (just in case), a back up plan, and the time management issue would probably fall into place (hopefully, sooner than later if I want to be successful).
But ambition keeps you going. . .

There are different ways of being ambitious. Some people aspire to become very successful in their careers. Others are interested in accumulating material items. Still others want to invent something or find a cure for a dreaded disease. There's nothing wrong with it. It's better to want to improve yourself than get stuck in a rut that you have neither the motivation or desire to get out of. It's sad to see people stuck in jobs they really hate but won't try to do anything about it.

Thats the great thing about capitalism, you can go as far as you want (probably the only great thing). But dont expect everyone to give you praise for dreaming big.
