Well my very first paycheck was from picking strawberries
during the first couple of days out of 7th grade. I ended up
having hayfever attacks and wasn't able to continue. That
was not only my first real job, but the most back breaking I
think. I learned how hard it was to earn money from picking
so many flats of them. There were alot of families out there
picking along with my girlfriend and I. I forget how little money
we earned back then. It wasn't even minimum wage. It seems
to me, when I looked at the meager amount, I knew I'd had
enough torture, in addition to my allergies. I probably spent it
on candy and snacks at the store. There wasn't enough to
buy anything worthwhile. But it was good experience.

remember the hourly rate, 'bout $25 or $30 a week. Good money for a Freshman.

The first thing I did with my first real paycheck (first full time job) was to put a down payment on a car. Had to stop borrowing Mom's car since she was charging mileage anyways.

My story was almost the same as yours. My coat was alpaca wool and was so warm. Though I was working full time , I still had to get it on layaway. We didn't get paid much in the early sixties but I felt rich at the time!

Not sure what it was with my 1st check. I laid away a leather jacket though and paid on it every week until the $90 was paid off. It's not something I'd wear now, but then I thought it was beautiful.

I made 50¢ an hour, and bought my long term gf (12/62 - 9/65) an ankle bracelet with a heart on it and had her initials engraved on it (BLA) in fancy writing. BLOCK letters make it look ....BLAH.

I bought clothes at a real department store, a sleevless kulott(sp?) jumper and sandals.
I worked for tips at the time in a big dining room.
