why is it important for small business to make a profit

Because if you aren't making a profit, you are paying to work. If that sounds like a good idea, I'll make it even easier for you. Just stay home, don't bother going to work and send me a check each month!

For the same reason ANY business needs to make a profit. Why stay in business if the only result is a never ending cash flow going out of the owner's pocket?

If it doesn't make a profit, especially 4 out of 5 years, the IRS red flags you for an audit wondering why you're staying in business.

You could call it volunteer work I guess, if the money just isn't coming in.

I dunno, mine doesn't pull in a profit right now. I am still living in my parent's house though, so that helps greatly.
