A squirrel has taken residence in my back yard. He sits on a brick wall that separates my house from my neighbors. He does this day after day. He appears totally motionless, like he's dead. I've seen him scurrying around so I know he's not hurt. Why is he just sitting there? Or could it be a she and there's a nest I don't see with her babies in it that she's protecting? My dog hates squirrels and will probably kill it if given the chance. So now I have to be careful when my dog is relieving himself in the back yard. What is going on here?

I've seen them watch the road under an oak tree for cars to go by and crack the acorns. Eating car-cracked acorns is easier than having to crack them themselves.

The squirrel is probably just taking a "time-out". They will often sit motionless but totally alert in between bouts of "feeding frenzy". There should not be a nest with babies at this time of year, unless you are someplace that has NO winter. Right now, the squirrels are all stocking up on food for the winter. As for the dog, HE is more likely to get hurt than the squirrel is, unless he is lightning quick. They can go from dead-still to ZOOM! in an instant! Neither my cats nor my brothers' dogs have ever been able to catch one.

That isn't the same squirrel. I think they are rotating shifts in an effort to spy on you in the hopes that you will one day grow accustomed to their presence. That is when they get you. And your little doggie too.

You should try and splatter it with a paintball gun and see if you recognize the color the next time you see it supposedly "lounging around" translated : Montionless monitoring of enemy compound and canine guard.

If the squirrel does have the color splotch from the paintball shot, then it probably is retarded and loves the warmth the brick wall radiates, at which point you should try and lure it into your yard with popcorn and peanut butter ball clusters set up next to your dog's doggie door. It'll give your dog and the retarded squirrel a good amount of excercise.

Alternatively, you could cover the top of the brick wall in easy cheese (bacon flavored), and other animals may start paying attention to your spying little furred friend.

Okay well maybe the squirrel knows your dogs are going to kill it so it is playing dead. And when y ou see it scampering around, well, squirrels have to GO too.

Maybe the squirrel isn't doing anything out of the ordinary and you shouldn't worry about it.
Kudos for considering it's safety when it comes to the dog, though!

Sometimes animals freeze when they are frightened. It could be that it spotted you and is relying on his "freeze" to hide him
