To allow all people in a country the freedom to choose what religion (if any) to believe in, and then create laws based upon only one religion's beliefs that all must abide by?

Of course not. People must be allowed the religious beliefs of their own choosing and the freedom to practice them unless that includes harm or infringement on others.

The freedom to choose ones religion and beliefs is important to have and should be a basic right of all individuals.
Laws should not be based on religious grounds they should be based on moral and societies needs.
I think what you mean is if immigrants come to another country and then demand that their religion and customs should be paramount over the local laws and expect the locals to abide by their churches beliefs etc
If you choose to go live in another country then you should be willing to accept that countries main religions and customs and beliefs and fit in with the local folks or if you can`t then stay in your own country where you are welcome to practise your own religion etc

I'm guessing your talking about the US? How In God We Trust is on all the coins and The Pledge of Allegance has the word God in it. I feel it isn't right, but I can't think of Religion having that much to do with America's government. Unless your talking about a muslim country or something? Eh?

And laws saying not to kill and steal are good laws, no matter what your religion is.

You mean laws against theft, or murder?
Thou Shalt Not Steal
Thou Shalt Not Kill

Yeah, I guess only ONE religion believes in that crap. We should be free to honor our own religions and steal and kill indiscriminately.

I'm aware that the Pope thinks birth control pills should be illegal but he's not having much luck with that.

I'm also aware that MANY religions believe that abortion should be illegal, not just one. And I'm also aware that many other religions disagree with that idea, so it's not illegal. Like anything else, it IS regulated and restricted, just like smoking in public, or pissing on the curb downtown.

And so far, I still can't get a pilot's license to fly airliners. All because some idiot's religious preference to stay alive overrides my religious belief that I shouldn't have to know how to fly. Damned religious nuts! (I mean them, not me.)

I'd like an example.
I know there are values held by religions that are shared by the non-religious.
Thou shalt not kill ... is this a religious belief and so we must exclude it from our laws?

A Taliban-like government? Dress code, subservient women, etc
That would be wrong

Our laws are copied ver batim fromthe bible.

Our country was founded by Christian Preachers

"Freedom of Religion" meant whatever CHRISTIAN sect you happened to enjoy

It was those commies appointed by Roosevelt and Eisenhower that totally messed up the original intent of the 1st ammendment.

And the real patriots in the Republican Party are struggling valiantly to overturn this insult to God and Country.
