There are good camps and bad camps.

Bad camps are pure power trips for the people running it, and do nothing but abuse the people there.

Good camps help build you up and build your self confidence. They can also help build a sense of team and a pride in what you can accomplish.

Take a gang banger with no pride of self or self confidence (the definition of a gang member), toss him/her into a situation where (s)he has to attain respect and privileges though honest work...(S)he tends to come out with a new sense of self, and a willingness to work with instead of against society.

Boot camps - adult or juvenile - succeed because they 'make' you do something that you know you should do but have been procrastinating on. When you're at boot camp, you don't have the option of goofing off or suddenly remembering something else (less strenuous) that you ought to be doing. And at boot camp, other people are doing the things you are supposed to be doing, so there is peer pressure to participate at that same level. And, darn it, after a while it becomes addictive and you actually enjoy doing all that stuff.

Interesting research question. Have you checked with your librarian to help you gather resources that might point you towards the answers? Another good place to start would be contacting a guidance counselor or two - they will probably know of these places, possibly have some literature on them, and then you could research articles about specific juvenille bootcamps.

One cautionary note about your question -- it assumes that they are good. You're going to need to look at both sides.

They run the same way as a military style, what the do is the first few days or weeks they break you down. think of it like you being a piece of paper and have all this bad things writtien on you, they get rid of it. Next they build you and pound in your head this is how you are supposed to do things. Your around this atmosphere all day everyday it will change you.
