I wouldn't vote for a presidential candidate because he said he was atheist, but I wouldn't let that stop me for voting for him if I think he has the correct stance on the issues. I don't think there's any connection between an ability to lead and a belief in religion.

No I would not. The reason is not because I am a bigot, but because atheists cannot justify human rights from an ex-sociological existence. To the atheist, rights are not innate to the human condition, given by a creator. Rights are granted by cooperation within the social contract.

Our constitution rests on the notion that rights are innate to the human condition and granted to us by God. An atheist does not recognize the fundamental reason for the bill of rights, that is to prevent government from taking innate rights, since that very atheist views those rights are priveleges of society.

Unless, of course, the atheist is a hypocrite and does not recogninze this contradiction in a belief of human liberty and atheism.

Also, I can think of bad religous men who were leaders, and good religious men who were leaders. But I cannot think of a good atheist leader, as all of them have been tyrants.

If I agreed with them on the majority of issues yes I would, and then I would do a happy little jig after voting for the candidate.

Certainly. What I require in a Presidential candidate is the ability to do the job! His/her JOB is NOT to be a spiritual leader. In this country church and state are SEPERTATE. I would no more care if my candidate declared him/herself Atheist than I did when my candidate in the past declared himself a Catholic, or a Jew. Their abilities and qualifications are the point. The President of the United States has a mandate to lead his/her country in many areas. Religion is NOT one of them.

Yes religion or lack thereof does not influence the way I vote, because I vote based on the issues and leadership abilities of the candidates.

Not only would I vote for that candidate, I would volunteer to work for the campaign.

Depends.

If they try to push their belief that God absolutely does not exist onto Americans through political action, then no.

If they respect others' beliefs and are the best candidate, then yes.

A candidate's religious preference really isn't important to me.

Personally, yes.
But I would expect others to vote for a candidate with similar values to their own.

If they were otherwise the best candidate, I'd have no trouble voting for them. Better that than someone who thinks God is telling them how to lead.
