I like having a mesmer in my group usually. However I think most folks dislike them because a mesmer is hard to play well. A lot of kids that make mesmers don't understand how to properly use them and so they basically suck. After inviting a few of those types into your group you get the general mindset that mesmers suck and you don't want them around.

The same is true for Assassins.

Mesmers are much more popular in PvP however.

Many people look down on mesmers because they think they are "fruity" Other people also give mesmers a bad name by not playing them well, unfortunately for them, mesmers are a great addition to any group as they can effectively shut down many foes. Another reason is people might not like them having very little direct damage as they instead make the enemy worthless and add damage over time, but I guess people don't like that as much as the other classes

A lot of group PvE play styles are either tank and kill or bait and kill or zerging. For that you need warriors to tank, monks to heal, rangers to bait/draw, and elementalists for direct damage spells and necromancers for zerging. Mesmers are good for gimping enemies, but that doesn't really fill the roles for the popular fight styles. So that's pretty much it, mesmers just aren't useful for the majority of parties, as such they are not often welcome. It's unfortunate because a well played mesmer can cripple the enemies making the warriors' job easier.
