It's more woman to woman. Moms can't handle letting go of their sons and seeing another woman take care of her son's needs.

Not to the same degree, I don't think. I think most moms just want their daughters to be happy, and if their daughters marry nice, loving guys with good jobs and promising futures, that's usually good enough for them. I think the whole mother-in-law/daughter-in-law thing stems from basic female competition. We are a nasty breed, we girls, and I think it is just sort of a way of trying to be the dominant female in the family. That's why so many women have these overbearing mothers-in-law who criticize everything, from their parenting style to their cooking. I think the sons-in-law probably have more problems with fathers-in-law because of the same dominant male thing. Also because fathers think of their daughters as princesses who no mortal man will ever be worthy of. : )

No. Most mother in laws who have issues or dislikes with there son in laws usually don't say anything directly to them. If anything they speak to there daughter about her husband.

However, the husband's mother feels she has free range to express her thoughts, insults and unacceptable behavior because she is the mother.

I think it happens more woman to woman. There's the generation gap and differing opinions of how a woman/mother/wife should behave.

Plus, if he's a momma's boy, then no-one is good enough for him.

The husbands get the same from the father-in-law.

It depends on the person. My MIL was close to my almost-hubby's first wife (they're both crazy so it makes sense) but I just have no kind of 'connection' with her so I think that pisses her off. She also doesn't seem to crazy about my SIL.
However, my SIL's parents treat my BIL as their own son, and my parents are the same with my fiance. My mother and father both adore him.

Smile. In my humble opinion, it does take place unless a daughter puts her foot down and firmly defines everyone's place in her life. I did that as soon as I experienced the tension brewing between them in most respectful way I could find, and ever since we all live in harmony.

Our mothers don't interfere in our marriage...in fact my mother thinks of my husband as her son.
