How ever most people home made costume are not looking good as the high quality costumes. I suggest that if you want to save time and make sure you have a perfect costume then buy one. Anything black will translate as vampire if you add white or pale face paint, red lipstick and a cape. Sex it up in whatever way works for you. The two-part answer above is really good.

As for the cape, a length of black fabric will work just fine. But get to the fabric store IMMEDIATELY. They'll sell out of black material very soon.

You could go one of two routes with this one:

(1) try the Goth look and incorporate a lot of black lace, velvet and Victorian or Elizabethan themes. for makeup and hair, try creating an elaborate but somewhat disheveled updo, incorporate some hairpins and a lot of hairspray. for makeup, make sure to use a lot of chalk white powder, dark eyeshadows (like an overly exaggerated smokey eye) lots of black eye liner and mascara, hollow your cheekbones by using a dark charcoal on the hollow of your cheeks (to create that un-dead look) and some very pale lipstick. Take a cue from "Interview with the Vampire" for that period look

(2) Create a modern vampire look with very avant-garde attire, lots of black leather and vinyl. Pale out your skin and use similar makeup as above.
