If you are looking for a good publishing house that is NOT a vanity press (where you pay for publication), there's two ways to go about it. The first is Writers Market. They list all the MAJOR publishers. The drawback is those markets are flooded with both professional and amateur manuscripts.

The second way is to go to http://www.fictionwise.com and start writing down publishers and titles. Then you go to Amazon and look for the same titles. If they are available both places, go looking for the publisher's website and get their submission information. This is the smart way to find small publishers that are doing it right.

If a publisher is not available at Fictionwise or on Amazon, steer clear of them.

Author House is a vanity press.

If you want to be traditionally published, and actually make money instead of giving away your money, I would try to find a literary agent and/or a publisher who will publish your work.

Some authors self-publish, which is fine, but I would rather wait for a great publisher like Simon & Schuster than spend all my money on trying to get published with a vanity press.

If you do want to self-publish, I would try lulu.com. It's so much better, and the basic packages are free.
