my PC wont detect my external hard drive

i restarted my pc, then turned on my external hard drive but my pc wont detect it, so i cant access the drive at all, ive tried going to device manager but its not listed....

so how do i get access to it.

nah sorry, but its still not working, my pc is not detecting the drive.

what do u mean USB hub? replace the cords attached to it?

Disconnect drive.
Restart windows with it disconnected
Reconnect it again. If that doesn't help, look under "USB" in device manager and delete the USB ROOT HUB entries, restart windows, let it "refind" the usb hardware and then plug drive in again

Not sure what OS you're running. I'm assuming that you're running XP. Try these steps first: 1. Use different USB cable 2. Use same setup on your friend's PC to see if it detects your HD. Connect on your PC. Right click on My Computer, select Manage --> Disk Management --> and see your USB drive shows up in there. If it does, select change drive letter to some thing else. If it doesn't see your HD, you might have problem with USB internally. But it seems you're running other that WinXP, in this case buy a PCI USB card (version 2.0) and try it.

Did the external drive work before?
Where is this device connected?
