It a disease that could be passed down in your family history and may never know you are one. (As was told, then taught just by a support group /s).
Some never want to admit they/er one, until they wake up one day to only find themselves alone, or when treated their family like friends and their drinking buddy's like family.
Some have to hit rock bottom, instead of hitting the bottom!
I personally have seen first hand of the damage a drunk can cause and paid for their action at the cost of too many drunks.
(Family and strangers.)

Having suffered from alcoholism from an early age (thank God I am sober now, though) I can tell you that it is definitely a disease, not a choice.
I never, in my wildest dreams, desired to be an alcoholic, wanted to destroy everything I held dear, chose to have blackouts so frequent that years of my life are a blank. But when I drink, I cannot stop. I have no control.
The only choice I have today is one God gave me, and that's the choice not to take the first drink.

Some never figure it out, others know that if it causes a problem in any area of their life they probably have a problem. It is a disease recognized by the AMA,as such.
No one can say you are an alcoholic,When you come to admit, that is the key.

I truly believe it is a serious disease. I think that all alcoholics are in denial until they are truly ready to make a change in their life. It is a devastating thing and ruins people's lives.

I WAS A BARTENDER FOR MOST OF MY LIFE AND DRANK ALMOST EVERY DAY, BUT NEVER GOT UP IN THE MORNING CRAVING A DRINK AND AM NOW RETIRED AND VERY SELDOM HAVE A DRINK. SO I THINK ALCOHOLISM IS A DISEASE AND I THINK SOME PEOPLE JUST BECOME ADDICTED THROUGH SOME CHEMICAL REACTION IN THE BODY JUST AS NICOTINE OR CAFFEINE WHICH I AM ADDICTED TO. DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSION AS I CHOSE TO DRINK,SMOKE, AND DRINK COFFEE I ONLY BECAME ADDICTED TO THE LATER 2.
