World War II started on September 1, 1939 when the Nazis invaded Poland. We didn't get involved until Pearl Harbor was attacked. Women took jobs in the factories to produce the planes, tanks, and munitions that helped win the war. They also were WAVES, which are nurses closely associated with the Navy.

In Asia- 1933 the Empire of Japan invaded and annexed Manchuria.

In Europe- 1 September 1939. Germany invaded Poland. The USSR quickly followed suit.

In the U.S.- Japan attacked Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941. U.S. declared war on Japan 8 December 1941. Germany and Italy declared war on U.S. 11 December 1941.

Women were engaged in defense contracting, nursing and were members of the Women's Army Corps (WACs) and Womenn Approved for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES). About 100 miles from my hometown there is an old airbase that trained pilots. The pilots from there flew cargo missions. They flew more missions, more miles and into more dangerous situations than any other group of pilots. They also suffered more casualties. Every pilot was a woman. It was Moore Field near Sweetwater, TX.

September 1939 with the Blitzkrieg of Poland. Some will say i began with Hitler's ascension to Head of German State in 1933.
Women in the U.S. served as WACs (Army) and WAVES (Navy); mostly service-related (typing pool, driving pool etc.). Kay Sommersby (sic) was Eisenhower's "driver" throughout the war including time when he was Supreme Commander of Allied forces.
"Rosie the Riveter" was a name given to some of the many women (again in the U.S.) who took up factory positions with so many men off to fight the hot war.
