when there is a show with so many characters paths and so many writers on board what system do they use for ensuring consistancy, cannon and avoiding plot holes??

For Heroes, Tim Kring gets to put his "stamp of approval" on everything. If he doesn't, then it doesn't make it into the script.

He really should take a cue from J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5. That show was plotted in its entirety, including major portions of the backstory, before filming began. He already knew where he was going when he started.

Honestly, Heroes odes it very well. But Lost latley has been limping along at best. Obviously they haven't done very well at wrapping up points, there are still story lines from season one that havent been taken care of. I think Lost sadly might be loosing its ground :'(
