I write military fiction books and know a lot about this. Courage is grabbing a machine gun and mowing down numerous enemy soldiers to protect your severely injured buddies and possibly dying in the effort. On 9/11, the fighters we scrambled weren't armed. They radioed their headquarters and requested that they be allowed to ram their planes into the hijacked ones. It would have killed the hostages, but might have prevented the plane from hitting the Pentagon or the one that landed in Pennsylvania from hitting the White House or Capital if the passengers didn't fight back. The pilots may or may not have ejected in time. They knew the risks. That's true courage.

Courage is the ability to do something that you may fear having repercussions, of just doing something the scares you. It takes courage to face the unknown we are all scared of the things we do not know it takes us out of our comfort zone. It's not just overcoming fear it is gaining something from over coming. Taking a stand against something that is not popular can be scary but is not courage. Courage is something inside you that changes you by doing it courage to overcome a fear yes but also changes you at the same time gives you more confidence in yourself. It takes courage sometimes to walk away from something, someone provoking you into a response you do not want to give for what ever reason.

Courage is choosing to act when acting involves additional risk for an outcome uncertain, but where the consequences of inaction are intolerable.
It's not courage if the outcome isn't in question or there is no cost to the person making the choice.

Courage simply means strength to me. The courage to stand up and fight for what you believe in and the courage to follow through with your dreams even though they may fail. Giving up is not courage, giving up is the very opposite.

Courage (to me) is living your life the way YOU want to despite what everyone else may say or think. Courage is striving to be the best person you can be-- treating everyone with respect and kindness. Courage is loving who you are, and loving everyone else for who they are as individuals. Courage is being thankful for what you have instead of worrying about what you don't have. If I didn't have courage, I wouldn't have my beautiful daughter and wonderful fiance. I've learned that you don't have to adjust your life and your beliefs to please or impress others because, in the end, YOU are going to be the one who has to live with your life's decisions/choices.

Courage is walking away from a fight and facing up to being called a sissy by piers. Courage is not overpowering adversearies, it is standing firm in your beliefs, but always allowing your opponent to surrender without harm. Courage is being just, not greed.

Accepting your draw backs is courage.
Not supporting somebody who is being cornered by a crowd even if he/she is right is not courage.

I constantly hear about young people being beaten up badly by a group, not necessarily a gang.. just a group.
Would they individually have the courage to attack someone?
These groups are not courageous people. they are cowards.
Courage is to NOT be one of those people and do your best to help, regardless of the consequences.

I think courage is being afraid of doing something, but doing it anyway.

Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to forge ahead despite the presence of fear.
