Are the Bears as bad as they appear?
Are the Packers as good as they appear?
Is San Diego as bad as they appear?
What steroids is Tony Romo taking?
Should we just crown New England now and call it a season?
This is a weird season so far. The Lions have been accumulating top notch talent for awhile, maybe they finally got their poop together? Enjoy the ride, this is why they play the games.

I don't know what planet you have to be from to think the Detroit Lions are playoff contenders. Sorry, the Cardinals will make the playoffs long before the Lions ever sniff it. The NFC North is strong, but it's certainly not stronger than the West. The 49ers absolutely destroyed the Packers in the playoffs, and only got better. The second best team, the Seahawks, got deeper into the playoffs than the Vikings (they actually won a game), and again, the Seahawks got better. And I'd put the Rams up against the Vikings Bears or Lions any day. Sorry, the North is a good division, but it's not the NFC West. Now you ~might~ be able to make an argument with the NFC South.

Look -
They scored 3 points up till the 4th quarter against a Bears team that had 7 starters not play.
They scored 20 some against a Philly team that is not that good.
They are better - but not that good. But that said -the North is much like the National League Central in baseball - a bunch of average teams at best. So yes, they can contend.

The Lions aren't that great. They've given up more points than they've scored. Plus they're going to have to stop Green Bay, who are America's darlings right now. The Lions' schedule has been pretty easy so far and won't get tough until the end of the season when they play GB twice, Dallas and San Diego.

Well, I sem to live in the crossroads of pitiful NFL teams. Detroit is an hour north of me, Cleveland is two hours east of me...and I've been subjected to their less than mediocre performances for many years no so bear with me.
I'm going to say no, they cannot contend. When a team has been that bad for that long, it's pointless to get excited about a sudden, drastic improvement. It could just be a fluke. I think they need to prove themselves over an entire season (or two!) to be counted as condendors.
It could just be a fluke. (same thing with the Browns)

They might hang around in that division and could very well finish 2nd. Its not cause they are really strong but more because Chicago and Minnesota are so weak. They still won't finish above .500 or make the playoffs this year.
They started 4-2 a few years ago. They still only won 6 games that year.

Can they contend in the North? Yes. In the Playoffs, should they make it? No. While they have a good shot in the division, playoff games are won with defense and a good running game, and we lack both.

Yes, they can contend in the NFC North as Chicago and Minnesota have showed nothing wortwhile thus far. I can see the division ending as it stands today.

As a die hard Lions fan, it pains me to say this but I don't think the Lions have looked good at all. I think all of their games this year so far have been ugly. I would love to see them compete but I just don't see it happening.

yeah! they shock the hell out of me last Sunday when they Played the bears put 34 points up in the Fourth quarter against our defense. 34 points in the lost to Dallas that quite understandable but the lions come on!
