I have a 1995 grand cherokee and my check engine light keeps coming on. Some days it will do it, some days it won't.
Oil is fine, transmission fluid good, tune up done fairly recently.
I did have someone tell me that it could be an O2 Sensor. What exactly is that and how much would it cost for repair?

you need to take it to auto zone or advance ,and have them scan the computer on it this way it will give you the trouble codes for what ever is making the light come on,then you,ll know what to do to repair it,don't try and guess at this one ,its get too expensive buying parts you may not need for it,have the computer scanned, this will tell you exactly what made the light come on and you,ll also know what to do to repair it ,don't buy nothing though until you have it scanned ,and the scan is free, good luck on it.

I had the same problem, my check engine light would come on for a few days and turn off. The computer in your vehicle still memorizes the code which indicates the issue with your vehicle. Based on the year, it may be your Catalitic converter. Check engine light has to do with emissions, but it could be the Oxygen sensor as well. It may be something minor like the gas cap, best thing is to have it checked by a factory trained technician. O2 sensor you can expect to pay a few hundred dollars. A Cat. Converter is more expensive, the part itself will run under 100 dollars, most places will try to rip you off. You can expect a good honest place to have the part plus labor for under $300.00. Dont go to the dealership, it will run you are 1K which isnt fun.

The absolute first thing you need to do is get a diagnosis to find out what is causing the check engine light. Their are hundreds of different components and sensors that could be causing the problem.
You do not want want to use the "shotgun" approach. Which is just randomly replacing parts and hoping you will get lucky and fix it. How can you fix something if you don't know what is wrong?
Take the vehicle to any reputable auto repair shop. The $50-$100 you pay for the diagnosis will be money well spent. Then you are one step on your way to getting the vehicle fixed.
Happy motoring!

Most of the above answers are helpful, but there is one thing you can do yourself, with no cost at all. Remove the fuel tank cap and look closely at the gasket in the cap and the surface of the filler neck. If you see anything on these, wipe it off with a clean cloth, then replace the cap, being sure to tighten it properly (See your manual). If the light goes out and stays out, you have probably taken care of the problem. If this does not help, go to Auto Zone or Advance for a computer scan, and consult a mechanic about the results. If you do not personally know and trust an independent mechanic, go the the dealer; they are factory trained, and usually honest.

Since the light keeps coming on there might be a problem in the light switch if Mobil oil level checked before stating the engine is OK. In that case show your car to an car electrician. Also monitor that there is no drop in the level of mobile oil after you have filled the engine to the required level. If there is a drop in the level it could be due to various causes - leakage from joints- engine pistons need to be replaced- gasket to be replaced. But all this needs to be done in car workshop.

Take it to any auto parts store like Autozone or Advance Auto. They test those things for free. After you know what it is, then you can have the appropriate knowledge so you can get it fixed at a reasonable cost.

Take the car to an Autozone and have them read the code that is stored on the computer. Then they should be able to tell you what part is going bad and they can also give you the price of the part.

good luck.

Just take it into the shop. Preventive Maintenance is always best. Just don't let them stick you with some un-needed repairs. Go with your boyfriend or a guy...........who might know what it is their doing.
