Well....I think you are half right. I believe that the person can be either shy and sensitive or proud and possessive but BOTH have low self esteem. Even the one who is appears proud believes he is lacking in worth on an internal level. Your experience may be with the shy guy but many others have dealt with the opposite. Someone I knew was somewhere in the middle, gregarious and out-going but also very sensitive. Abusers come in many different packages. The most common deniminator would be an upbringing that included abuse in some form.
