Most definitely, teachers are virtually powerless to maintain any sort of discipline in schools today and the kids know that, when I was at school in early seventies the teachers who handed out corporal punishment were very respected, these teachers were the best when I look back, there was no class disruption whatsoever, you did your work or you would be in serious trouble end of story, however the new generation of teachers who were coming in around that time with the new liberal soft approach who did not believe in corporal punishment did not get or gain the same respect and kids in general spoke to them more or less how they liked. The people on here who are saying no and are going on about it being the fault of the parents and society don't seem to realise that the lack of tough discipline has now been part of our society for some time, the parents of kids today are also the result of this slack society a society gone stupid with political correctness and ridiculous human rights laws against you even smacking your own children. Caning in schools was only used in very extreme cases and usually only a small minority got to that stage, but it was that regime of strictness and discipline that kept most of us in line, and gave us a clear understanding of right and wrong, that which is very sadly missing today!!!

Not reintroduced per se. I do think it shouldn't be villanized the way it is. If my particular way of disciplining my child is to use spanking, that's my choice as a parent. As long as no abuse is present and the child is cared for properly, there is no reason why anyone should tell me how to discipline my children. I was spanked as a kid, but only when I really did something awful. It was always in moderation and I was never beaten. There are lots of other ways of discipline, but it all comes down to personal choice and what works for you and your family. =)

By corporal punishment, do you mean using a paddle or a ruler on kids in elementary schools?
If so, then no, it should not. It would just make violence permissible among the kids. Its bad enough that you hear stories about kids bringing guns and other weapons to school. Corporal punishment would just give them justification to use them.
It also makes it easier for adults to victimize children. Some of these people may take out their issues on children simply for the reason that they are adults and children should respect them. That is not discipline, its bullying.

If the corporal has done no wrong, why punish him?
Seriously, I think the only message corporal punishment teaches children is that if you apply some violence people will do whatever you want to make them do, and that is not a good message. I remember my mother telling me in one sentence "caning works!" and then in the next "it was the same faces every day!" thus scuppering her own argument.
As for corporal punishment for criminals, again it send out the same message - violence makes people submissive and willing to do whatever you want.

Absolutely...discipline in schools has deteriorated since the EU made us ban it.
When I was in school (60s and 70s) the cane was used but very sparingly. Everyone knew the threat was there so most people behaved.True, there was a tiny minority who would still have misbehaved even if garrotting was allowed but most pupils towed the line, knew what the limits were and the penalties for overstepping them.It was your choice to break the rules so no-one could be blamed for your punishment but you.
Nowadays there is no deterrent, you get pupils telling teachers in their face..."Can't touch me. I'll get you sacked/sue you."
Discipline in schools is at an all-time low...teachers are instructed not even to shout at pupils, lest it upset them (diddums). The liberal PC lot have a lot to answer for.

Yes. Because there is no more compulsory military service and boys just don't know what to do with their energy. Girls should never be beaten even by their boy friends or husband.
I think people are now beating the wrong people.

Scrap the Human Rights Act!
People whinging about their rights without taking any responsibility for their actions.
Prisoners whinging about their rights.
Yobs whinging about their rights.
Naughty school kids tormenting their teachers - quick to shout about their rights should the teacher retaliate.
Yeah, the Human Rights Act has done more harm than enough in the UK!

Yes, and the sooner the better, since the abolition of it the gnagsters etc are getting away with light sentences and then been allowed out to re -offend. I would hang all the drug smugglers, dealers, child molesters as well, they are the scum of the earth. Also bring back conscription.
