K thru 8 was elementary, then.
15 minute recess in morning and again in early afternoon plus 45 minute lunch with play.
Course the older classes, students hung around building & visited or helped with younger relatives. Teachers had there 'coffee' break except the few assigned to watch playground.
9-12 was high school = no recess and 20 - 30 minute lunch.

I did.

You don't give these buggers recess, and they will be bouncing off the walls by the end of the day.

I help teach a children's martial arts class on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Saturdays, they are little angels. Wednesdays they would drive Jesus to Infanticide, because they've been cooped up in a class all day with only three breaks. It's a real test of my patience to keep my cool with them.

Oh, and we were allowed to play tag, and army, and red rover red rover and dodgeball, and wrestle. . . all of these activities that would draw a lawsuit or flies like honey and have been banned because some little darling might have their feelings hurt or their knee skinned. Kids broke bones, came in crying sometimes, and fought like ferrets. I wonder how we survived?

I am a 59 year old grandmother who graduated from High School in 1966. My Mom (in the 60's was a middle school aide). So I can speak from experience in our small town that Yes, students from K-8th grades had "recess time outside".

That was NOT the case for High School students..(grades 9-12). I am from a small town in NY State near the PA border in "upstate" NY (anywhere is "upstate" if it is "upstate" of NY City.

In the 60s:
In grade school, we went outside during nice weather and played.
In high school, we had a 10 minute break in the morning, called Social Break.
Today:
My school that I teach at does not have breaks during the day.

Yes. And it was great playing tetherball, soccer, hop scotch, or just getting on the playground equipment with our friends during a break in the school day.
