i am pregnant due November 25th 2007. i just recently went to the dr to do my last sonogram. i am not a high risk pg, never had a miscarriage, & this is my 1st baby. When the pics came back from the sono (she showed me &you could definately tell) that the babies left kidney was "dialated" she called it. She said that it was only a "mild" case & she wasn't worried. she'd be more worried if it were fully dialated/inflammed and if they both were. I asked her what causes this? She said they really dont know.they think it's becuz sonograms have gotten so indepth &clear & are progressing everyday that they never looked at this before& it was never noticable?!she said that they see this quite often these days, & that i shouldn't worry cuz she wasn't. they will just check the baby when she's born & check her kidney's&make sure they aren't failed. so why tell me this if your not worried right? freak me out! i just wanted to know if any women had something like this and what ever came of it!!

Dilated kidneys are a fairly common and usually inconsequential finding. It just means that you can see some fluid in the renal pelvis, suggesting that there is some delay in the fetal urine trecking on down the ureter to the bladder. If there is adequate fluid around the baby (which it the baby's urine in the first place), it is not considered a serious problem.

Usually it will resolve, even in babies where both kidneys are dilated. Sometimes it corrects itself just after birth.

I'm so sorry your Doctor has frightened you in this way. Lots of babies have dilated kidneys and most are fine after they are born. Your new little one will have another ultrasound scan after He or she is born to make sure the problem is not persisting. It's not a sign of kidney failure but could be a sign of a small blockage in the outflow of the kidney, an obstruction. If the post natal scans do show a blockage it can be unblocked as soon as your little one is old enough. Please don't worry.

I'm sorry that you have to go through this. But if she wasn't worried then I bet that you will be fine. Good luck!
