The cheapest way to go is to stay in a boarding house or a pensione house. Pensione houses are like motel 6's. Nothing fancy just a usually clean room with ac and creature comforts like hw and catv. They run anywhere from $200 to $300a month depending on location and how they are kept up and furnished. Boarding houses are way cheaper. You can get a basic room with a bed and fan for roughly $100 or less per month. Don't expect maid service or anything like that there. You will also have a shared bathroom, not a private one like a pensione house. The problem is neither of those places will have cooking facilities and they will surely boot you out if you try to cook in the room. Furnished housing is extramely rare and expensive. Plan to spend $1,000 minimum to setup a one br place. 2 months down as security and first month rent is the norm. You can rent a decent 2 br place for $160 or so per month. Less for a one BR, but one BR places are extreamy hard to get. Eating in the local calderetas you will probably spend $1 for breakfast and $2 for luch/dinner. Maybe less depending on what you like to eat. You would not save much buying from the local market and preparing it yourself. It's cheaper to buy it from the calderetias and no hassle with cooking dishes etc. Besides the locals can use the business and it's a good way to meet people and make a few friends. That's the local prices. Not the foreigner special price. I know the local prices and speak the local language so I don't get ripped off.
