What are your views on the idea that everyone should be automatically on an organ donor list and should have to opt out if they do not want to?

Do you think that this is unfair and that no-one should be on the list but can opt to be on the organ donor list if they wish?

Or do you think that the Health Service needs these donations to save lives and everyone should be automatically put on an organ donor list?

I think this is a subject that people tend not to want to think about when they are fit and healthy.. it's only when something happens that they realise the difference being on the register can make.

In my opinion, the 'opt out' system is a good solution, providing it's made easy (and free) for people to opt out if they wish to.

There is no 'forcing' involved, and it wouldn't be compulsory - if people feel strongly about it they can opt out. It's just changing the emphasis on who needs to register their feelings on the matter.

All this will do is include people who can't be bothered to opt out - and I imagine that this would be enough to save thousands of lives.

I don't agree with it, sounds like more interference from the nanny state. It should be up to the individual to make the choice. No doubt it would be virtually impossible to remove your name from the list, just as it is with Spine. I am afraid that I don't agree with organ donation, sorry to those of you who do, but that is my personal opinion, especially having witnessed certain aspects of the NHS. A Doctor told me never to carry a donor card as in an emergency they won't fight that hard to save your life. I think the whole thing would set a dangerous precedent.

On balance, I think the opt out option would be best.
I think that the majority of people would consent if they were asked, but by the time that it comes to asking relatives, feelings are naturally running high and it is a difficult question to ask.
There could be so many people given a better life if organs could be respectfully made available.

As for carrying a doner card, this does work, but I think there are still a few complications if and when it comes to using the organs of a card carrier. (not sure on this bit, but it seems to ring a few bells).

To make it automatic is tantamount to compulsory having to surrender your body to the government when you die. Thats crazy. You should have the right to donate only if you wish. Also, what about all the people who don't realise they have to opt out? Its too late when you're dead and your relatives have to deal with your body being carted away without your permission.

I agree with organ donating, but its a personal right.

I wish it were that easy. Unfortunatly we have the freedom of choice here. By forcing everyone to be on a list that takes away that freedom. I believe in everyone donating organs/tissue but not at the expence of a god given freedom.

Consider that most of the poorer people wouldn`t even know how to opt out, we must look at the possability that the less fortunate may be sacraficed to supply parts for the rich and interlectuals.

I personally think it should be a requirement by hospitals to get you to sign up to the list when you are in hospital or just visiting. You can then tell them face to face why you would like to be excluded from the list.

That would probably cause a lot of problems. I hink it would be best to be more proactive in trying to get people to sign on with organ donation. Everyone reading this, did you check that box on your driver's license? I hope so.

I don't agree with it, I think most people are aware of the opportunity to make it their wish to donate, if they don't then I don't think anyone has the right to touch that body.......
