It IS a sexist term. A male chauvinist one, as middle aged males (sugardaddies) prefer sixteen year old, budding-boobs virgins over their sagging breasted, wide-after-childbirth slits wives.
But we, the girls, should not encourage such coinage. So, i am NOT telling how do I felt then. If occasion comes in future , I will tell .

This expression may have come from a song published in 1898 called "When You Were Sweet Sixteen". It has since been recorded by a number of famous singers of years gone by, and is still sung by Celtic and Irish singers. (Look up the Wikipedia entry for more info.) Sixteen has for a long time been the traditional age at which girls were "supposed" to be able to fall in love, enter into society, etc. - a "coming of age" age, as it were. It is still used in many places as the minimum age for drivers' licenses and other legal recognitions of maturity for both males and females.

well a lot of people in America have a sweet sixteen party. i suppose it is because you have a driver's license, your almost an adult, etc. so it's an important age. people on their birthday usually have a big party, larger than normal. some parents take them traveling or something. it really depends on the family and their background.
