A very tragic accident occurred in my state a few weeks ago.A mother 'forgot' her 2 year old daughter was in the back seat of her vehicle, closed the windows, locked the doors, and went to work for 8 hours.it was a very hot day and the child died.
The police have not filed any charges against the mother, saying it was purely an accident. The mother says she's a busy mom of 2 and thought her husband had dropped the 2 year old off at daycare.
Well,I am a mom of 4 and find this so tragic, and appalling. In my opinion, she should be charged with AT THE VERY LEAST child neglect.
How does one 'forget' a 2 year old daughter?!

"Firefoxy"--Well,we are the' mutual neaseator society' then, witch.
All I know is that my NUMBER ONE priority is my children and I have safely brought them to ages 8,12,13,and 16--and I sure AS HELL would never leave any of them unattended or 'forget' them somewhere at the tender age of 2.
Now get off your soapbox and go back to church...

I'm sorry but this astounds me. How can you "forget" your child is in the car?

I have a 10 month old and I am permanently exhausted as we have no help from family and friends so I am caring for him 24/7. He is a bad sleeper and I rarely get more than 5 hours sleep at night.

Yet I would never "forget" he was in the car! Thats ludicrous.

This is going to sound awful but for her to "forget" like that maybe she was on some sort of drug or misusing alcohol? I mean she would see the child as she got out of the car and locked it!!!

Yes I think she should be charged. I can't see how its possible to get out of a car, lock it and not SEE that theres a 2 year old sleeping on the back seat!!!

Oh my God that is so sad.
Just like an episode from CSI.
I am a busy mum to 3 but I think I would notice which child is in the car with me. Saying that I have walked out of the Post Office leaving my child in a buggy when she was a newborn and I did manage to get about 300 yards before I realised.

Whether the Mum should be charged or not I dont know, yes it is a form of neglect but there was no malice intended at all and I cant help but feel this mum will never forgive herself for this and maybe that is punishment enough.

The article nor your question and opinion say whether or not she was even aware that the child was in the car. I am working on the assumption that she did not know, since she says she thought her husband had dropped the child at daycare. If she did not know the child was even in the car, how could she possibly be charged with anything? There is an ongoing study being conducted now (as there have been several informal studies in the past) of the increase in number of these incidents in correlation with the passing of laws demanding backward facing rear seat child safety seats, and/or the law placing child safety seats in the rear of the vehicle, whether front or back facing. It begins to look like the ones these laws were enacted to protect are the ones most damaged by the laws.

Edit: Why would firefoxy nauseate you? You asked for opinions, did you not? Sounds like an very honest response to me.

That sounds like a crock of you know what. There is no way a Mother can forget a child, no matter how busy she is. I believe charges should be filed and the more the better. I wouldnt leave a dog in a hot car let alone a child.

Obviously a perfect mother like yourself would never suffer the strains and stresses of life, that a normal mortal would suffer.
If the police are satisfied that it was a tragic, tragic, accident, what new information do you have that would convict this poor woman.

In my life, I have made mistakes... some of them serious, and have casued damage to my own (and occasionally other peoples property) - luckily, none have been tragic or fatal.
In a couple of cases, I realise that I got off very lightly

I also had one occasion where I was given a real verbal beat-down down by someone who made a similar, and worse, mistake a day or two later.

let he who is without sin cast the first stone

Wihout any other information, you can only give this woman the benefit of the doubt. In which case, she has suffered a tragic loss and should be pitied, not stoned

{edit} well you too nauseate me... someone has lost a child and your only reaction is to start building a gallows
what happened to sympathy. I bet - i would bet 1 million dollars, that you have suffered lapses in concentration with one of your four kids.
I bet you have had occasions where you though they were at 'A' and they turned out to be at 'B'......... luckily for you, your lapses did not result in a tragic accident.......... but, "there but for the grace of god, go I"

I don't go to church - I am an agnostic/atheist - I just happen to have a bit of human empathy something sadly lacking in the anonymous lynch mob who seem to inhabit YA! these days

I would have to know a little more detail before passing sentence.
Did she not notice the child because the child was quiet or asleep ? That is crucial. If the child was then I feel it was a very tragic accident.

OMG thats absolutely unbelievable. I'm a busy working Mum of 5 and whilst noone's perfect, how on earth do you forget your child is in the car with you. She must have been able to see her in the rear view mirror.

Without doubt, gross negligence - if it'd been a dog she would have been charged with cruelty to animals. That poor baby!

Yes i believe charges should be filed, how can a mother not see a child in the car, ridiculous. I Personally i think it should be manslaughter and the mother should be jailed...
She should not be allowed to get away with this, that poor child would have boiled to death...

I think she should be charged with something. How do you forget a child... much less a 2 year old. What a horrible and cruel way to die!!! This makes me sick and this woman should have to pay for this.

I think that there should be a thorough investigation into this to see if this was gross negligence, or an accident, in which case the mother should be treated for some sort of mental incompetence as she is clearly a danger to herself and others.
