Is it a deliberate and conscious distortion or are they not aware that most of those scientists themselves had christian beliefs?

At those times, EVERYBODY belonged to some religion or another. There were no atheists - people that believed in science only. The scientists were the closest anybody came to atheism by questioning the beliefs and exploring new boundaries of human knowledge.
I think the tendency of Atheists to compare Christians to those old Christian Theocracies is a defensive reaction.
There are, unluckily, still plenty of Christians out there who behave that way. Not all of them, mind you. Not even a majority.
But unluckily, it's those stiff-necked Bible swingers who cannot accept that other people should be allowed their own opinions and beliefs that time and again wind up in the spotlight because they force themselves into it.
So they loudly proclaim their opinions, forcing non-religious people to defend themselves.
And the loudest amongst the defenders? Yet again the most aggressive non-believer.
The whole "live and let live" theory still eludes them.
Luckily, there are plenty of smart people on both ends of the belief spectrum that won't have anything to do with either of the fighting fronts.

I don't believe in the existence of an ethereal supreme being, but I reject the term "atheist". Your need for social constructs doesn't constitute a need on my part to define myself in terms of nonexistent beings.

But Xtians do seem to be determined to oppose science. If you ask them, the world is 8,000 years old, the first man was made from dirt, dinosaur bones were planted by god...ad nauseum. Why would a being who could create an entire universe need to plant dinosaur bones? Why would he create six-legged sheep or conjoined twins? Is it so "Ripley" could make a living, or does god simply like oddities?

Perhaps YOU believe your god impregnated Mary, and Jesus was reincarnated, and you too will be reincarnated if you succeed in demonizing others but I doubt a serious scientist would.
