A number of possibilities exist:
1- If aliens do not exist, or have not visited us; then the government has no way to disprove it has no information on aliens - someone can always claim that everything is not being revealed.
2- If aliens exist and the government has only partial information, then they would not want their information-gathering process to be weakened, or for others to copmete with such information gathering.
3 - If aliens exist and the government has a decent amount of knowledge but no agreement of peace/alliance/mutual non-aggression, then widespread awareness could undermine such negotiations. An alien culture with lifespans of thousandsof years could be very leery of making a 'quickie' agreement with one era's leaders, as future leaders a comparitively short time later may have different attitudes. Thus the government might have to prove consistence over a long period of time in order to complete negotiations.
4- If aliens exist and the government has obtained evidence/technology by either violence (shooting down a UFO), accient that may be misinterpreted as violence, the government would be very leery of releasing that information. Our TV broadcasts do go into space; an intelligent civilization may monitor our broadcasts and say(allegorically), "Oh my Zrquin! They killed Mike! Those ---s! Let's teach them a lesson!"
5- If aliens exist and have shown evidence as to why ongoing contact would be a bad thing (panic, culture clash, disease, ideology, any number of reasons), the government would actively discourage a dialogue that might press for ongoing contact anyway.
6- Aliens and the government have a compact of sorts; part of the deal is that the secrecy must be maintained. TV broadcasts might alert a common enemy, or see foreign governments try to horn in on the deal.
7- Aliens are hostile but distant; only a few scoutships have reached earth, and the main fleets are generations away. THe government is using that time to advance/arm, some publicly but most secretly, and is also encouraging a gradual-revelation strategy by promoting more science fiction to accustomize people with the coming threat.
8- It is simply a matter of acquiring advanced technology and not wanting to share.
...or many other possibilities.

Hello,
Buzz Aldrin was on Larry King about 6 weeks ago and mentioned that it would be impossible to keep such secrets away from the public, especially over 60 years if things like Roswell were true. Look at other secrets that were eventually leaked that involved national or world security.
There is also no empirical evidence ever presented to prove we have contacted or had visits by aliens.
Cheers,
Michael Kelly

Your question a) assumes there are extraterrestrial beings, b) they have visited Earth, c) the "government" is familiar with and is conserving the reality secret and d) no-another than "government" has had touch (or has been compelled to maintain quiet). whilst the possibility there at the instant are not some (possibly many) alien lifeforms interior the Universe is vanishingly small, there is not any evidence they have visited Earth. in reality, in the event that they're something like mankind we ought to continually be happy they have not because of the fact that they may well be greater like the extraterrestrial beings in Independence Day or Predator than followers of the "best Directive" as according to famous person Trek. yet even assuming there have been alien travelers to Earth, why might the government attempt (word I say attempt because of the fact that i in my view have self belief which may be impossible) to maintain the reality secret? because of the fact it would reason havoc in the international. evaluate what this might do to non secular ideals, to our technologies (for sure primitive incredibly speaking), to our social and cultural id? purely think of of the famous person Trek episodes on the subject count of "first touch' yet opposite it.

No secret to one who knows. Why do they want to keep secret that they didn't go to the moon. It is a fact they can't go to the moon it is a heavenly planet and one can only go there with excellent Karma not by some ship. They can come here but we have to leave this body to go there. It's all in the Vedic literature if one wants to know all about higher beings and what planets they rule and live on and what each planet is like. But people don't accept because they don't want to accept what they can't see.

The existence of other intelligent beings would render most religions void and their sense of the creator. Does anyone think our society is ready for the dissolution of our morality foundation and structure? We have already seen the devastating affects of morality decline in American youth who are only responsible to themselves and not something higher. I would appreciate a Shield from knowledge out of fear from everyone else.
