I need high speed access but do not have landline phone service. I have a cell phone but our provider does not offer high speed internet in our area.
What are my options? The local cable company wants over $50 per month.

Cable is probly the best way to go. I know they have satelite companies that do this, but they are expensive too. Good Luck!

Landline Internet Providers

You have several options:

1. Dial Up - You need a land telephone line and also an ISP such as aol or one provided like bellsouth. This is extremely slow.

2. Cable - No need for an ISP, very fast, contact your local cable company to see if they offer it in your area.

3. DSL - No need for an ISP either, almost as fast as cable, you telephone company provides this, they have to have the equipment set up for your area, contact the telephone company, they may or may not require voice land line services with the DSL service.

4. Cellular - This is mostly for laptops, There is a cell phone card that fits in the laptops PCMCIA slot and gives you access where ever you can get a cellular signal, This is just as slow as dial up and I do not reccomend It at all.

5. Satellite - i think some satellite dish providers offer high speed downstream service but you would need dial up service for the upstream (downloading content such as movies, webpages etc would be fast, but sending email and hosting servers etc would be on a dial up connection) Im not real up to par on this type of technology so i would get a second opinion.

6. WIFI - it is possible that there is a wifi router near by that you could share or pay for, some providers even have these set up as part off a service like apartment complexes, sometimes you get luck and the neighbor sets one up and doesnt encrypt it and you can get free internet access.

If you have cable TV already, then it's worth the price to get the blazing fast cable internet speed. We have Comcast here running a new copy of Vista and love it's speed.

Don't even think landline except DSL. Dial-up is out of the question these days. High-speed DSL assumes your community has data-grade telephone lines which are themselves subject to losses. I wouldn't wish a satellite link on you.

Go with the cable. The next step will be to FIOS.

Cable, satellite or phone line.

You can get (as an example) SBC DSL without having expensive phone service (just get basic service), what you truly need is the phone hardware in your home/apt.

If you think that cable is high, don't even think about satellite, reliability is not exactly the best either.

50.00 a month is not a bad price either. Hit the phone book and find internet providers. All they need is the hardware in your home, cable lines already installed from a previous tenant etc, phone lines installed already.

High speed internet sources are available as follows and all services may not be available in your area:

1. Cable TV Internet - CATV as you described above is available
2. DSL from Phone Company - this requires a land line phone
3. Cellular Internet Service - you indicate this is not available in your area by your carrier; check other carriers to see if they have it available
4. Satellite from the people who provide a dish based TV service; not as dependable as wired but sometimes it will do the job
5. Wireless from a local ISP - if you have clear line of sight to their source.

If you want high speed, you need to get either DSL or Cable (Satellite is available also, but is very expensive and has horrible lag). With DSL, you will need a landline. You don't need one for Cable...if you already have Cable Television, your Cable Internet price should be lower.

Your "question" is not clear. It sounds like you want internet for free. There are not too many things in this world that are free. Nonetheless, here is my best attempt to answer your question. If you want internet at the house you have the following options 1) DSL - which is internet over the phone line.. This cost more than $.01 so its out. 2) Cable/Fiber - Faster speeds over coaxial/fiber. This cost more than $.01 so its out. 3) Mobile Broadband - Its like a WiFi hotspot over 4g/3g cell towers. This cost more than $.01 so its out. 4) Cell Phone tethering - You said you have a cell phone, use that as your means for internet at the house. Depending on the type of phone you you have, you can tether your phone to your computer at home to give you "Free" internet at the house. I do this with my jailbroken iPhone for free on AT&T. It will take up your data usage but if you have a large (or unlimited data plan) you should be okay.
