I agree, it was a HR. And your question is...

I don't think they were that bad - everyone was in position according to convention -had they been in a different position another close call would've been missed and everyone would criticize them for something else.

Bottom line is the umps are usually right - even in super slo-mo you see they're almost always right. I thought they called the strike zone very consistently and tight. It was a game with a lot of close calls, those are tough and you can never get 100% of the people happy.

On the home plate issue:

It was fielder's interference.

OK - even if Holliday missed the plate (which appears possible) then Barrett was wrong to block it since Barrett DID NOT have control of the ball. If you don't have the ball, you can't block a base!! That is fielder's interference and therefore the ump can grant the next base free (which would be home plate in this case).

My conclusion: the announcers/analysts ought to learn the rules then they could've cleared this up right away - you can't just stand in front of a base without the ball in hand... True, he ALMOST had the ball but almost doesn't cut it.

I think the ump paused because he had to make sure he was right - probably had to think a second before committing on the call. Once he realized the ball was never under control, either Holliday got the plate or there was interference, either way he was safe :) Also note that no one argued so they must've accepted the ruling.

Here's a thought - maybe criticize Hoffman for giving up four straight shots??? Don't start sounding like cubbie fans now (always blaming someone else).

YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE CONTROL OF THE BALL TO BLOCK A BASE. it says in the rulebook that if you are in the process of fielding the ball, u may block any base however you want

I thought the ump made the right call based on how fast the ball kicked back into the field. The chair didn't budge.
There is probobly some sort of wire supporting the padding at the top of the fence and the wire caused the ball to jump back to the field after the contact with it.
It makes no difference tho, game over.

I didn't watch the whole game, but I did notice that the winning run never touched the plate. The ump was hesitant to call him out or safe, but I think he realized his life depended on him calling the runner safe. Poor umpires, it's a thankless job.

Real bad. MLB adds additional umps for these games and they stand right next to eachother. The wrong ump made the call too. MLB really needs to straighten up the ump corps.

frist of all that wasnt a homer, so that was the right call. second thing, the bad call came from the last play of the game when the home ump called holliday safe. he clearly did not touch home plate and was later tagged, so he should have been called out. stop complaining u didnt get a homer, u won the damn game.

Yeah, turned out to be a make up call...but honestly the dude at the plate blew that call...That shot from earlier sure looked like a homer...my question to that lady out there...Why pack your glove to the game if you're not gonna use it????

We(rockies fans) lucked out when they missed the call at home plate. Karma?

You mean the one where they interviewed the woman who claimed it missed the padding, but hit the rail, even thought the rail was covered by the said padding? It hit the padding, and was not a home run.

Very bad but even in big playoff games always miss calls.
