My daughter and I go to the library every two weeks, if not sooner. I have been taking her since she was a little girl.

You don't say what you do, maybe you're a teacher or maybe just a concerned citizen who laments the loss of an educated population, anyway, here goes.
Does your library have anything worth reading? Do they have a process to order materials that your population wants? Is the collection lively and interesting or is your local library a storehouse of ancient, dusty, tomes that nobody wants? Is the staff friendly, and do they know your tastes? (A librarian who knows what you like to read can be trusted to tell you about the newest book by your favorite author and put it aside for you.) Libraries aren't just books either. What about books on tape--something to make those long car trips bearable? Libraries also have the newest DVDs or can get them for you, saving a trip to the video store and all that money.

Recommend your favorite books. Volunteer to do story hours or help at the circulation desk at your local library. Plan a day with friends where you stop by the library, then go to a coffee shop or park and read for a while. Organize a book club.

Good luck!

Here's what you do.

Have them turn on the tv and turn the sound up. Then have them go into the next room, lay down, and then just listen to the dialogue for about ten minutes. If the sheer stupidity and shallowness of what they hear doesn't drive them to books, I doubt anything will.

Keep in mind that each individual is different. Those that wish to better and broaden their knowledge will seek out advise and the answer. You cannot force todays Society into doing anything other then what they have planned. Sad but true. Many people do not wish to broaden their lives. They will tell you that I can do it on my own. Falsification of ones self being?.....Denial................

If you ever figure out a way to turn your friends into avid book readers, please let me know. I wish just one of my friends liked reading-I feel like that's a big part of my life that I can never share with anyone. Oh well...

My only advice is try starting a book club and forcing them to read something, hopefully they will participate and like it. Good luck!
