Due to the liberal trait of egocentrism, it's the belief they populate the realm of intelligentsia superiority. This is reinforced, each for the other, while pretending they're enjoying the soy-substitute chicken breast while on various college campuses.
Alone, this behavior could be tolerable, but when combined with the ever present smug sanctimony of claiming the moral perch that rests above the slow-witted remainder of society....

I don't totally agree with that. I think many dems are smart people they just don't have common sense. Of course that is something your born with, not taught. Common sense would tell you not to vote for someone who will take more of your money. Dem's will raise your taxes. Common sense would tell you not to vote for someone who wants to make you have health care. Dem's will. Common sense would tell you that you want protection from terrorists. Dem's will cut almost all tools used to fight terrorism including not funding our military... It's just common sense....
