A LAN or networkcable is without a doubt the cheapest way to transfer data. Both your computers are guaranteed to have networking abilities. You used your old computer to surf the web didn´t you? Just hook your computers up and use the windows filesharing methods.

If you are talking about moving data from your old PC to the new one, I would recommend getting a USB drive. Some USB drives have capacities of 8GB or more and you could transfer data fast and easy.

Plus you get to use the USB drive for many other purposes such as backing up files, getting files from your home to office, school.. etc. Its a must have device.

If this is a Vista machine that you just purchased you can use the Windows Easy Transfer tool that is located in the "System Tools" folder. Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Windows Easy Transfer.

You could buy a network cable, and link the two machines together via their LAN sockets.

Or you could do it the far easier way and just buy a USB memory stick. Transfer the files from the old PC onto the stick, then just plug it into the new PC and retrieve them.

You can buy a connecting cable and use the built in transfer software.

If you want to copy only your data then connect your old hd to a new pc as a Slave and copy all files you want.
If you want to have the same os ans apps without installing again than you should create an image of your old hd and restore it to a new one. In this case you can try Acronis True Image Workstation which has the Universal Restore utility, it allows to restore to different hardware. You can create an image with another app but i/m not sure you'll be abble to restore it to another pc.

There are several you could use.
Burn the files onto a CD or DVD ( and that way you get to keep a back-up as well)
Memory stick
Or you could connect the two machines together with a lan crossover cable.
