Yesterday I used a word that my husband did not understand. (The word was "epiphany," if you want to know.) So, we got into an argument that I "think I know everything" and I think he is stupid and I "pretend to be better than everyone else." And he demanded to know where I learned that word!!
Now, I know he was just saying all of those things because he felt inferior because he did not know the word, even though we both have college degrees. I mean, you learn new things everyday. Why didn't he just think "cool, I learned a new word?" Why did he feel he had to make me feel like crap because I used a word that was not part of his vocabulary?

If he doesnt know what epiphany means then he should read more, take a college class here and there or something to build upon his education. That isnt a rare word. What college did he go to and get through without ever hearing the word? Was he raised in a shack by deaf-mutes?
He probably wont be willing to but maybe you guys could start a ritual of learning a new word every week and use it in all sorts of sentences with each other- playfully.

He felt belittled by the fact that you knew something he did'nt it's VERY common in men because yes most need to feel strong, together and smart. You hurt his ego a little so just try to do some things to show him how much you respect him as your man!!!

It's hard to tell what he is thinking... and some of us have well-developed vocabularies, some do not.... it's all about our level of interest in learning the English language.
My ex boyfriend said things like "I blowed it up"... "I don't got no"...."i RETCHED for it" Retched? ok whatever! Even so he had a huge vocabulary... interesting that he forgot to take English in school.
Maybe your husband is jealous? I have no idea.
I like www.dictionary.com's word of the day...
take care, and don't worry about him... and yes men have to feel superior, even tho they aren't!!

Not all men are like this. My husband regularly ask me what certain words mean (he has a college degree and I don't but I read all the time). He has no problem with it at all.

He's feeling inadequate and inferior.......it's a male ego thing. You'll just have to let it go. He shouldn't be feeling threatened by something so simple, but that's his problem.

No. Not superior.
Just appreciated.
P.S. - A guy who doesn't know what "epiphany" means probably drags his knuckles when he walks. Why did you marry Piltdown Man?
