90 Honda Accord DX.
Each plug came with a little metal ring/washer. Do I have to use them? and which way do I install them? (the two sides are not the same).

It's called a crush washer.
It's used to keep the steel base of the spark plug from sticking to the aluminum heads of your car.

Yes you need them.

Small diameter toward the spark plug.

They get crushed while the plugs are being installed in order to make the joint gas tight and to prevent the hard metal of the spark plug from damaging the surface of the engine block. Hence the name, 'crush washers'. The wider side sits on the engine block and the narrow side on the plug.

They are used to seal the plugs in the cylinder. When you remove the old plugs, check and make sure that the old ones also had the washers. Do use them, and don't over-torque the plugs when you install them.

It's to seal the plug. The widest part of the washer goes toward the plug.

They are a crush style type of seal. So manufactures use them and some don`t. The double layer has to different outside diameters. The larger outside diameter goes toward the engine side .

gasket is to prevent the spark plug from coming loose.replace it every time you replace the spark plugs or else it will get loose . the small end washer should face the cylinderhead.
