That pitcher Thatcher was mowing down the Rockies like crazy,he brings in Hoffman(the all time save leader??)and the roof caves in.Yes, Holliday did not touch home. All you people who think instant replay should not be used,go tell that to your Padre fans who got stiffed. The Rockies were hungrier.

They didn't emphasize small ball, no bunts, steals. Thatcher was doing awesome, but you can't fault the guy for going with history's greatest closer. Brady clark is the one who did them in with all those misses in Center Field.

I don't think he made a blunder by bringing Hoffman in - he's the closer. The easiest thing in the world is to predict how a player will perform after the fact. As for the instant replay argument, if there was indeed an instant replay rule, the missed home run call would have been overturned, and the game quite possibly would have ended in 9 innings.
And to any of you Padre fans that think that one call cost you your whole season, may I remind you that if they had simply one on either Saturday or Sunday against the Brewers, they would not have been put in position to lose last night.
Black took a big gamble by not starting Peavy on Sunday, hoping that the Padres would win and that he could use him instead to open the playoff series. If anything, that is the move that didn't pay off. He also should have pulled Peavy much sooner then he did. It was obvious that he didn't have his best stuff.

Or tell it to a Cardinals fan who was there in 1985. But Still, instant replay does not belong in baseball.
Safe or out could be argued either way, but what made the call so disgraceful is that the ump allowed the Rockies pouring onto the field and the fans make the call for him.

I only saw the game from the 9th, but it appeared that Bud Black did everything a good manager should do. Maybe he should have taken Peavey out earlier.

I don't think it can be called a blunder to bring in the all time saves leader to close a game.

As for instant replay, you'd have to review the non-homer call by Colorado's Atkins in the seventh inning, too. Maybe that was really a homerun off the wheelchair.

In my opinion, both plays were too close to be overturned on review. Plus, on the play at the plate, the catcher didn't tag the runner until after the runner was called safe. I don't think you could overturn a call under those circumstances. The Ump made a safe call so the runner would have to assume he touched the plate and would do nothing to avoid the tag. It's like something happening after an inadvertant whistle in football. No further change in the action should be allowed to occur.

The odds would say the Hoffman would do the job. Luck and the Rockies power bats were not with Hoffman on this night. Do it again ten more times and I would say Hoffman gets them out more often than he would blow it.
That all said, I am happy that the Rockies won. What a great Cinderella story!

Personally, I think Bud Black's mistake started during the last game of the season against the Brewers. He was saving Jake Peavy for the playoffs, which I understand. But San Diego hadn't clinched a spot yet, so why wouldn't you send out your best pitcher to ensure that the team gets into the playoffs? I think that move backfired on Bud and as a result, they had to play that play-in game.

Bud was trying to make sure his playoff roster was set, but he should have made sure that they actually got into the playoff's first don't you think?
