I heard and not from a fan of either team that it was a bad call at the plate, the guy didn't touch the plate but was called safe, which allowed the Rockies to win.

Can anyone confirm that ?

well I'm a fan of the Rockies but that was a bad call. Holliday never touched the plate, the catcher did an awesome job of blocking the plate. Oh well the Rockies are in. :) :) :)

The Ump was right but maybe not for the reasons he or others think. It was fielder's interference.

OK - even if Holliday missed the plate (which appears possible) then Barrett was wrong to block it since Barrett DID NOT have control of the ball. If you don't have the ball, you can't block a base!! That is fielder's interference and therefore the ump can grant the next base free (which would be home plate in this case).

My conclusion: the announcers/analysts ought to learn the rules then they could've cleared this up right away - you can't just stand in front of a base without the ball in hand... True, he ALMOST had the ball but almost doesn't cut it.

I think the ump paused because he had to make sure he was right - probably had to think a second before committing on the call. Once he realized the ball was never under control, either Holliday got the plate or there was interference, either way he was safe :)

No, Holliday never touched the plate. The camera angles were difficult to determine but the shot from left field was clear enough. It doesn't matter that the catcher dropped the ball, he picked it up and made the tag. The umpire was not in a good position to see the play believe it or not but felt he had to do something so he called Holliday safe. Wrong call but the bottom line is.........it doesn't matter. The Padres should never have put themselves in a situation like that in the first place. Two run lead and the all time save guy on the mound. Sad!

I saw a replay this morning...the catcher droped the ball, but the runner never touched the plate. So when the catcher went to get the ball and retag the guy the ump had already called him safe!! It was a very BAD call...(I am on no one side, so its an objective point of view)

capt ahab -- you are wrong .. a catcher has the right to block the plate as long as a play is being made or about to be made ....he was waiting for the throw and is allowed to block the plate .. the ump got it wrong and holliday should have been called out after barrett applied the tag

He never touched the plate.....
Catcher blocked the plate with his foot.......
He should of been out once the catcher picked up the ball and tags him.
