In round numbers , you can ride the crap out of it and around 50-60 thousand miles you may want to do a top end.
You know , hon and rings and a valve job, but 50-60 k is the earliest you will have to worry about anything other than maintenance.

Those bikes should last you a while. HD makes great bikes that will last you as long as you own it. They have for a while but people just don't want to believe it. Why do you think most old bikes on the road are HDs?
Don't listen to the guy about women riding 883s. It's true that it is smaller and some people find it girly, but the sportster is probably their best performing bike aside from the V-Rod. Personally, I just don't like the narrowness of the frame and the height of everything.

I have a 1995 1200. Basically the same bike. I have 75,000 miles on it. The top end was rebuilt but that's about it. I regularly change oil. I think this bike will last as long as you want with regular maintenance.

Even following the mechanic guide maintenance schedule there is no guarantee. It may last a year or it may last decades. Good Luck.

So long as you remember it's a low powered bike and ride it accordingly, then it'll last for years. Thrash it and it'll deteriorate rapidly.
Service it by the book and pay attention to keeping the brightwork in good order, and you'll get bored with it and trade it in, long before it falls apart.

the O-N-L-Y thing that could save that bike is "AMSOIL"
use Amsoil Synthetic Motorcycle Engine Oil in ur 883
883's have a common problem of overheating the rear cyl and it locking up.
