I have a Sony that doesn't allow pause during record and it takes about 5 seconds to start recording when I push the record button. (I don't like that.)
I like that it records onto -R or +R.

sometimes the remote doesn't work so i have to stroke it

Ours only records on +R. It also wears out over time, even if it's kept clean. Also, when watching dvds, it gets stuck whe it's paused too long and you have to turn the whole thing off and start over sometimes. Ugh.
But I love the ability to record stuff anyway, so I deal with it.
