Could be your belts need to be tightened. Check for proper tension and, while the engine is not working put water on the vee belts. If the sound ceases subsequently, then your belts were loose. Normally this would happen when load is imposed on any belt driven component (A/C being the most susceptible).

fan belt? Be more specific, does the engine cut off or does the noise cut off? Does it happen at start up or when you brake?
