It is the celebration of all saints day and all souls day! All saints day falls on the 31 of October, and all souls day falls on the 1 of November. That is if you are catholic. Many celebrate the day of the dead witch is a Mexican tradition, passed down from generation to generation. In witch one is to respect all those who have come before you, and to wear costumes to scare off evil spirits, so that the dead can rest in peace! But in modern day we just trick or treat and through parties. It is a holiday originally celebrated by catholics and Mexicans.

Ok I was looking this up a bit bc I got annoyed with my boyfriend because he said that it's a Pagan Holiday and since he's Christian he thinks Paganism is a bad thing. Basically I think it was a day of the dead in Ireland originally...It was originally for adults and it became commercialized in the US not too long ago so that children dress up...I think originally they dressed up so the dead werent able to tell they were living....
That probably doesnt make too much sense but thats what I got out of it

It's the ancient festival of Samhain, the Celtic new year.
This pagan holiday serves a very important and healthy psychological function. It's the holiday that acknowledges the death aspect of the life cycle (all pagan holidays celebrate some aspect of the life cycle), and invites people to 'walk around in its shoes' so to speak. By dressing up as symbols of the things we fear, and by allowing ourselves to be frightened (as in haunted houses), we acknowledge and embrace our fears and therefore, gain a better understanding of them.
This brings our fear into light and removes its power to make us afraid. So you see, it helps us process the fear and change it into something manageable. The holiday also celebrates the hope of an afterlife, so it's not just about fear either. This is why it's so fun and exciting, and good to participate in. Even for kids.
Kids already have fears, what they need to know is that they can be conquered by understanding.

It's kind of like Dia del Muerte, but we have the parties at night. It is the eve (the night before or evening) of All Hallows day... when all the spirits are roaming the earth (which is why the children used to dress up as witches and ghosts - now they dress up as anything)

Halloween is a mixture of several holidays and traditions that have evolved over 2000 years!
all hallows eve is October 31st, All saints day is November the first.
basically you dress as the dead so when the dead come back on that night they are confused and don't take you.
treats are handed out to please the spirits so they won't trick you.
