Great Question!
This is a huge challenge for me and many people I know. It is easier, no always better, to stay with the old instead of taking the risk to change.
Some things I can let go in a short time.
Others, a little longer.
Some, so far for ever.

give it some time..a week is too small of a time and 3 years too big of a time ..i would say somewhere in the months (the sooner the better)..if you keep this thing going on you will get nowhere except more troubles..be honest with yourself and if you are being held back by something or you know that something is not doing you good ask yourself: what will it cost me now? how about later?will i lose anything or will i gain something?too much emotional distress, drama, and how long can i put up with it? when you answer some of those questions and are honest with yourself you will realize that only then you figured out what is good and not..for some people it takes as little as a week and for others as much as a year..there is no magic number because this is different to each individual.

As a human being, you will never hold on to things that are not in your best interest. There is an absolute truism...a person will ALWAYS, 100% of the time, do what they perceive to be in their best interest.
It doesn't mean it IS in their best interest, but that they perceive it to be. Sometimes it is because they have not considered all the potential benefits and consequences, don't understand the reality, are placing high benefit to near term effects, ignoring long term effects. Psychologists use this all the time. When someone is doing something clearly not in their best interest, the most important "discovery" is what is causing this person to perceive it to be in their best interest. And they are perceiving it to be in their best interest.
So if it is not working in your best interest, you wouldn't hold onto it. If you are, then in reality you are perceiving that holding onto it is MORE in your best interest than not holding onto it. You just have to figure out WHY you have that perception and what it is that you consider beneficial.

I hold on to some things that are not in my best interest forever, out of loyalty. I adapt to the situation and make do. My inner core I do not allow to become damaged.

It used to be decades, then became years. I think its down to a day or two now.
The difficulty is in being sure about how to define best interests and then to know if some concept fits that description.

Well there's no point holding onto things that are not working at my best interest. I'd only hold onto something even for eternity when I know it's for my own good.

I would say an Eternity, because i have stuff in my closet that have been there for years, and no one can tell me to get rid of it, because it is mine, and it is no Business of anyone what I do with it.

holding on has always been my greatest diadvantage. it's because i find worth in every thing i hold on to, and i can't think of stopping to hold on because i know it is what i want. it can take me a year or less before i move on and let go. it'll be better if i just let go quickly but i kept thinking 'what if there's more into it?, if i let go wouldthat make me happier? would it be better?' and as usual, it is better for me to let go. move on and get a grip of something else. =)

Greetings. unless one is a idiot then only until one realizes that they are not in your best interest and abandon them. is no logical reason for anyone to continue to hold onto things that are not in their best interest. though we all do of course, I think we all have some packrat blood in us. No time scale possible. Depends mainly on your need to hang onto the past more then anything else. some people live only in the past. some live now.
