No. It takes parents to raise a well adjusted family.

So you want to raise your child isolated from society? What's the point of hard work, accountability and self reliance if not to be a productive member of a society that has accepted you, nurtured you and given you an opportunity to apply those traits? Nobody exists in a vacuum, and people are molded by their families and their communities.

No. My neighbors have among them been arrested for murder, armed robbery, rape, and grand larceny. One was murdered in a drug raid. I thank my parents for raising me instead of the village I grew up in which was not a very good one. I have moved away from this village and am proud to be a hard working and self reliant person because I was NOT influenced by my village. I invite Hillary to visit my old neighborhood. It would change her mind. Her book, incidentally, is a nice addendum to the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx.

In an American Indian village every one worked to survive, did what they could, even the children.
Every adult watched the children and if a child misbehaved any adult could discipline that child, spank or verbal correction.
Old Indians, who could no longer work or perform a function were encouraged to leave and go on their own.Often cripples were abandoned to die.
Where Hillary got the idea She wanted 1 big village,I have no idea. There was little in a village that was liberal or socialistic.

If you actually consider the statement metaphorically, the way it was intended, is that society has a huge influence on how a child develops. All the things you mention are a part of the society and the family in which a child is raised. Of course, if you live on a mountain by yourself with no contact with the outside world, your literal interpretation is fine. Now go on and ask a ridiculous question about Hillary's cankles or Edwards' hair - you have to play to your strengths.

Absolutely it does, but it's not an individual effort. Look at community involvement 40 years ago compared to today, take bowling for example. Today it is not uncommon for people to bowl alone whereas not that long ago it was in leagues and a community effort.

A child in a community wherein teachers, neighbors, parents, relatives, etc. all are working together will have a much richer childhood than a child whose only reliance is parents or teachers.

Never put your faith in "the group".

Hard work, accountability and self reliance never went away, and those that have it are often the successful ones.

Both Hilary and Bubba are very protective of their own daughter, yet they believe it's O.K. for other people's children to be raised by a village.

It takes a parent. Preferably two.

It takes parents who are responsible and determined and dedicated to raising their child the way they want him or her to be raised. Don't expect anyone else to do it for you.

No, it takes two responsible parents and a sense of independence.
