I am a graphic designer looking to apply myself to programming. I want to choose a language that will enable me to deliver web applications, and provide a solid foundation for the programming languages to come. However, I don't want to spread myself thin by trying to learn multiple languages at once - I want to choose one and learn more later.

Which is better for today, and the next 3 years? PHP, Javascript, or something I haven't mentioned? Opinions are nice, but please provide sound reasoning.

Alright, let's say I choose to learn each one. Which is the best to start with? Also, I hate Microsoft and prefer to avoid using something that is limited to their platform.

Probaby javascript, though I personally prefer PHP. They do different things, though. If you want to get more into the web apps, learn .NET using C# or Visual Basic. A lot of it is point and click and you'll get more out of it. There are more libraries to use and the skills will transfer to other programming languages. The drawback is that it will only run on a Windows server and won't run on Linux or Unix. Most hosting companies have windows servers, so it shouldn't be a problem. Tool to use is Visual Studio.NET.

All Microsoft-bashing aside, if you're looking for valuable, marketable skills, I'd choose Javascript and Ajax. The corporate world works on Microsoft products, whether we like it to or not. The corporations that are paying developers big bucks actually WANT to use Microsoft, because there is a massive support system in place that makes them feel warm and fuzzy. If they want to plunk down a bunch of money and get their hand held, they can. They can't do that with open source.

If you want to be marketable, know the Microsoft-endorsed stuff. Know AJAX and .NET.

You do not have the choice!
Javascript is what runs on the client's machine: you must know it.
PhP is what runs on the server: you must know it.
AJAX is what makes javascript and PhP work well together! SO you must know that as well!
Since (X)HTML is the output code, you must know it.
Finally, databases are often necessary. Learn MySQL.
My server is down today (New machines being installed), but go later to www.skytargets.com, web designs, some truth about coders and coding: a very interesting article on this subject...

The fundamentals to research this faith are The Holy Quran and sacred Hadith ( sayings of the Prophet ) from official, customary resources, now not distinctive to discover. This 'tale' is nowhere there. If you're a sober seeker of competencies, I sugggest that you just grow to be a constant reader of 'The Muslim World Quarterly' a journal released through Hartford Seminary in Connecticut USA. Google seek shall aid. Or move to the regional University's division of Religions. At all instances, Islam has been a strictly monotheistic faith. No wavering. No compromise.
