We recently moved into a new apt. and for the last few weeks our baseboard heater has been making a sound like water flowing or swishing around, and its not even on!!... its been doing this every day and i was wondering what it was and if its something to be concerned about?

i didn't even know that baseboard heaters used water or any kind of liquid for that matter to heat.. how dose that work?

I agree that the sound is due to air in the pipes. The water is continually circulated. Ask the manager to have their maintenance people bleed your baseboard if you are not sure how to do it. This will let the air out. Best if the whole system is bled though. Not a problem though. Baseboard heat is no different than having radiators, just smaller. They still have water running through them unless there has been a change to electric baseboard heat.

I am going to assume that you have a common boiler for heat. Sound travels in pipes a long way, and sometimes when the boiler is not active water is run through the pipes to help keep the system operational and to remove any air pockets from the pipes. Air pockets allow rust to form quickly. Ask you building super about it to get the details.
