I'm a liberal dating a conservative. I like him a lot but worry that our differences will become an issue down the road.

Well, it's worked well with my parents. They just had their 40th wedding anniversary. My Mom is liberal and my Dad is conservative. I grew up conservative, my sister is liberal. My sister is my best friend.

We all have tons of fun talking politics. We do it with respect and civility, and recognize that everyone has a right to their own opinion. That's the key, in my opinion.

I've always been conservative. My wife, when we started dating many years ago, was liberal. Extremely liberal. But once she got a job and started paying taxes and we had an opportunity to talk and discuss the issues, in time she came to understand why I was 'conservative'. Today, while not so conservative on some issues, is even more conservative than I am.

But yeah, it can work if you are both accepting and appreciate the source of each others beliefs, but chances are, one of you will change. More than likely it will be you. While liberalism sounds nice, it's tough to defend with reason and in time you'll appreciate this fact. You can't win a debate using 'emotion', no matter how well intended.

Sure, James Carville married a Conservative.
Mary Mattlin, or something like that.
Two of them are actually really funny when they are on TV together.
Believe it or not, there is MORE to a relationship than just politics!!!

Not if your politics are based on your principles and beliefs. Principled conservatives believe in freedom, especially from government. Principled liberals believe in enslaving humanity in government programs. How can those opposites ever get along in a real long-term relationship?

If you are a liberal dating a conservative just have him pay for everything.

That's how it works in the real world.

.....not an easy combination. I guess it would depend how tolerant he was towards others who do not follow his beliefs.
