Use a metal rod with a tee handle attached across the top and a point ground on the other end. Thinner rods penetrate the ground easier but it depends on the type soil you have. Clay would probably require 3/8" rod.

get a piece of rebar about four feet long,grind one end down to a spear point,lock a good vive grips on the other end and tap into ground with small sledge hammer

Yes... buy a ground penetrating RADAR... or a "synthetic aperature RADAR"... either will work quite nicely.
