college break will be coming up soon and I'll help him pay his way - but where to go for the most life for our budget? I've suggested alternate lifestyle retreats, monistraies, trips abroad, or just getting in his can and going. Any other ideas? I don't want his life to be wasted like mine was.

The most valuable time I ever had when I was about his age was when I went out on my own for 3 months to another state where I knew no one. I think your son would benefit from a trip to do volunteer work in a poorer country.

Send him somewhere where he knows no one and life isn't all that easy.

Good luck! :)

The more you encourage him the more he will want to see the world, my daughter will be starting her junior year soon, and since I can remember I have been encouraging her to get out and explore what's out there, our town is very small an hour away from anything, but she has been going to Arizona to visit my younger sister, and now she wants to finish college there, so any kind of encouragement is good, fasinate him with ideas of seeing other countries, places you never been to but always wanted to. I don't know if young men feel differently than young women, when it comes to experiencing life or how to go about it, but encouragement seemed to work for me. Reassure him that he is young enough to enjoy his youth, and has plenty of time to settle down, even though life is short, seeing all the wonders of the world you just can't miss out on, maybe he will find his place along the way.

I would say that imposing your idea of what his lfe should be like at that age is foolhardy. Allow him to live his life. He is not unintelligent, just narrowly focussed.I you want to treat him to a trip, perhaps send him to a computer camp in Europe or Japan.

It is His LIFE. You have a LIFE of your own and helping does not involve projecting your ideas about LIFE upon him. Life is never changing, yet "ideas and concepts" of LIFE are constantly being changed. Maybe it is His decision.

the twenties are like the terrible 2s, one learns and grows, so show him what he might miss and go with him... no life is wasted if you do what you can
